Looking Back

This week the theme is looking back to the war, because the VE 75 Celebrations are coming up on Friday.
I hope that you are all busy making bunting to decorate your house, and planning how to share afternoon tea with your neighbours.
I know that some of you were at the Guides' meeting on Monday, helping them learn some wartime skills such as bandaging, stretcher bearing and entertaining the community.
During the war, Rangers were slightly older, and so nearly all were working full time, having left school at 14. They still had time to enjoy Guiding though. In many cases they had no leaders and so organised themselves, the older ones teaching the younger ones the skills they would need. Many volunteered too, in ambulance work, firefighting, caring for children, helping at tea bars etc. Later some volunteered for the Guide International Service which went with the army as it progressed across Europe, setting up refugee Camps etc. They were with the first soldiers to enter Belsen, which must have been very traumatic.
Do you know who this is at the helm of the boat?

The current Ranger Programme encourages you to learn a little about Guiding History. Can you do these challenges, which would have been second nature to Rangers of wartime?
Tie at least 6 knots, and send and receive messages by semaphore.

Plus, of course, anything that you can do to volunteer and help other people stay positive and healthy during this difficult time.
Keeping yourself fit and healthy is important too, but if you are feeling down, one guaranteed way of improving this, is doing something to help another person.
