Be Prepared
The Guide Motto is Be Prepared. It was chosen by The Founder, Robert Baden Powell, and is shared by the UK Scouts, as well as Guides and Scouts all around the world. The last time Guides and Scouts en masse needed to be prepared was in the Second World War, 80 years ago.
So what are you prepared for? This time it isn't bombs and the possible loss of your home and neighbourhood. It isn't needing to cook in an open street, or build a shelter. But our communities need help in all sorts of ways. The National Volunteering Scheme is for over 18s, so most of you don't fall into that group, But there are things you can do to help keep up community spirit. If a parent is a Key Worker and working more hours than usual, or becomes sick, can you run your home? Can you fetch things from shops for neighbours? Look after a flower bed instead of someone who is over 70 and self- isolating? What else are you prepared and able to do?
If you completed the first challenge about the skill of listening, then you are ready to try the other First Aid Challenges. Some of you have parents who can teach you, and there are sites like the Red Cross and St John's Ambulance which have good videos and advice.
Skill 2: Symptoms and treatment for a Sprain. How would this treatment be different if you are at home or on a hillside?
Skill 3 Symptoms and treatment for a broken bone. As you are Rangers, this goes a little beyond, 'Do not move them, call an ambulance'. If you are out in the wild and a long way from help, you may need to move the person, and to make this easier you can splint the broken bone. Have a go at improvising splints from objects you might have with you, or could find around, eg walking pole or a tree branch, or another part of their body.
Girlguiding are also putting challenges on their website which you can have a go at. Click Here
I hope you are all managing to find time to relax and look after your health regularly. What is working best for you?
Over the weekend, Girlguiding issued a challenge. Can you collect one item starting with each letter of the alphabet? 26 in all? We tried it, and I'll put the photo up next week. I hope you will have a go and send in your photo.
Keep in touch, I'll be back next week.
