Home skills in lockdown
I'm not sure how many of you celebrated VE Day, or took the time to learn a little more about what life was like for girls of your age during the war. But this week we are going to look at skills which are useful in today's world.
Whilst you are largely confined to your homes, it's a really good time to brush up on all those DIY skills. You may also be lucky enough to be able to ask for tuition from a parent whilst they are still working from home or furloughed.
These skills will come in useful when you go away to college, because tradesmen are VERY expensive, or you may want to fix something before a landlord finds out...
So here we go:
Change a fuse in a plug ( check the amperage!)
Unblock a sink (mixture of bicarb soda and white vinegar)
Test the smoke alarm and change the battery
Silence a squeaky hinge.
Use filler to make a hole in plaster disappear (you can demonstrate this on a piece of wood with holes in it - no need to actually make holes in the bedroom wall.)
Demonstrate what to do if you smell Gas.
Deal with a 'fallen tree' by sawing a branch off a log or actual tree.
Quite a list that Girlguiding have compiled! See what you can manage. If you aren't sure how to achieve any of them, we have plenty of knowledgeable leaders at the end of a phone to help you out.
